needed = ( target − current × (1 − w) ) / w
Variables: needed = Required score on the final (%) target = Desired overall course grade (%) current = Current grade before the final (%) w = Final exam weight (decimal, e.g. 0.4 for 40%)
Score required on the final to reach a target overall grade. current is your grade so far, w is the final’s weight (as a decimal). It tells you what you must score on what remains.
Worked example: Step 1: current = 84%, target = 90%, final worth w = 0.40. Step 2: locked-in points from coursework = 84 × 0.60 = 50.4. Step 3: points still needed = 90 − 50.4 = 39.6. Step 4: needed = 39.6 ÷ 0.40 = 99. Result: you must score 99% on the final to finish the course at 90%.
