Decimal (SI) units count in powers of 1000, while binary (IEC) units count in powers of 1024 because memory is addressed in binary. Drive makers quote decimal GB but Windows displays binary GiB, so a 500 GB drive shows about 465 GiB (500 × 0.931323).
Worked example: A 500 GB drive as reported by Windows: GiB = 500 × 0.931323 ≈ 465.66 GiB Internet speed check: 100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s, so a 750 MB file takes about 60 s to download
